About Russian Thistle Ferment
Russian thistle is a common weed throughout the southwest United States. It grows in calcareous and sandy soils, and outcompetes many other weed species; often considered invasive. Russian thistle is an accumulator of calcium, oxalic acid, and many minerals that are deficient in surface desert soils.
Russian thistle tends to be one of the richest indigenous plant sources of oxalic acid and calcium. Harvesting and fermenting this plant in the fall brings the greatest amount of these two highly valuable compounds to the forefront in this naturally produced nutritive.
What We Observed
Upon soil application of this ferment, we noticed IMMEDIATELY:
- Tremendous fruit firmness! We found we could bounce fully ripe cherry tomatoes off the ground without even bruising them!
- Improved juiciness alongside the firmness – when you bite into them they literally explode! Yet the skin is not tough!
- VASTLY improved shelf life! We had tomatoes that were 7 weeks from harvest and still perfectly firm without wrinkles or soft spots, and perfect flavor 7 weeks after harvest!
- Improved Frost resistance! We saw ZERO leaf damage at 32°F, down through the 20s, and in our area finally got the first frozen leaves at 19 degrees F! The plants were still setting new fruit when the nights were in the mid 20s!
New Product – First Year Results
This is a newer product, just created this year after some experimentation with indigenous plant ferments. We’ve only had a chance to see what it is capable of for this past year. We are beyond amazed at the performance we’ve seen from it, and we truly look forward to all your feedback as you have a chance to trial it and see what other benefits it can bring to the table.
How to Use
Soil Application
Dilute and apply directly to soil as a drench. The calcium and oxalic acid will be taken up through the root system for best results.
Foliar Feed
Can also be used as a foliar feed to provide trace minerals and beneficial compounds directly to foliage.
Frost Protection
Apply before expected cold weather to help plants build frost resistance. Regular applications throughout the growing season provide the best protection.
